Meet Patty Boss

Patty was born and raised in Scott Township here in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. She graduated from Chartiers Valley High School and started as a secretary for an industrial furnace manufacturer in Carnegie. She also worked at an advertising agency and a consumer products company before taking time off to raise her 2 daughters Jen and Michelle. When she found herself as a single mother, she became a paralegal and worked at two prominent law firms until her retirement in 2013. That is when her creative passion took flight!
Patty’s story is familiar to many. She always enjoyed making things – sewing, ceramics and general crafting of all types but it started only for herself. As compliments from family and friends grew, she felt confident enough to make gifts. Her mini Christmas trees were a favorite and she soon found herself selling at local craft shows.
In 2008, she discovered KoolKat Designs when it was in Mt. Lebanon. She started with a few jewelry classes soon she was hooked! She tells us that she is a bit of a perfectionist, so sometimes she couldn’t get her project completed in time, but she enjoyed the classes, the interaction with other students and what she learned from the instructors.
After a while, she started making her own jewelry designs. Her work was unique and very well constructed so she began to consign with Koolkats. After a while, she realized that so many people were making jewelry that it was very competitive. This made her think of other things she could design that her customers would like.
Patty admits to really enjoying a good glass of wine. This got her thinking of things that went with entertaining and for individuals who liked wine. Soon she started to make theme based wine charms. She followed her passion for sports and popular hobbies to create them. Customers began buying them and her new product line began!
For several years, KoolKat participated at the Three Rivers Arts Festival. This was an exciting experience for Patty to try out her new entertainment wares. She went “cork crazy”!! This led to an expanded selection of wine stoppers, wine cork coasters, wine bottle bags and wine cork trivets. Her imagination ran wild with new ways to incorporate wine corks into her crafts. Soon she began making picture frames and holders, key chains, necklaces, and even Christmas trees, ornaments and other seasonal decorations.
When KoolKat became Artsmiths, Patty was invited to continue as an artist. She always felt that she was encouraged to try new things and supported as an artist. One of her creations, a wine cork picture holder, was selected by two separate television shows to be used in their set designs!! Now that was “Kool”!
Recently she has found a renewed my passion for beads and is now creating decorative pens, letter openers, serving utensils and other items. She also became interested in soft sculptures and started sewing adorable holiday themed gnomes! Since the pandemic and quarantine began, she used her sewing talents to create hundreds of face masks which she donated to assisted living and nursing facilities, as well as family and friends.
The arts offers her an outlet to cope with the world today. She is fortunate to have her 2 daughters
married with families of their own. She lives in South Fayette Township and is a glowing grandmother to two very active boys. She has a part time job at Pandora Jewelry and in addition to her making, she enjoys bowling and socializing with her friends, and of course following the Pittsburgh Steelers!
Patty is thankful for the opportunity to work with Artsmiths. She has been affiliated with them for over 10 years and is proud to display and sell her work. Obviously, the feeling is mutual!
